1 cup math-rock, 1/2 cup melodic indie rock, 1/2 cup experimental
pop. Blend in medium bowl, pour into pan, bake at 350 for 30-40
minutes. Pattern Is Movement is what you get. These
guys have an eye for connoisseur-like self-production (read the
recording notes here),
which, I suppose, is necessary for a record as detailed and complex as
this. However, for all their convolution and experimentation, PIM
is a pretty accessible band. These songs seem to hoist
their melodies almost warily above exact layers of rhythm and sound,
ending up somewhere between Faraquet and Pinback, with a lush
pop sensibility (as evidenced by the delicate hooks of "Non
Servium" and "Gunsmith") combined with an edgy
angularity. The band's sound is quite unusual, but it really
works - it's nice to see all this originality has been channeled into
a successful venture. While this is a pretty brief record,
there's loads of stuff to pick up on. Whether you like math-rock
or just melodic indie pop/rock, there should be more than enough here
to warrant your attention.
