Morissette, anyone? I thought we all got tired of her in the
mid-90's. But I suppose Kelly Buchanan is trying to revive her
shrill-voiced singer/songwriter style. Is this a good thing? Perhaps
so, or perhaps not, but nobody can deny that Match has quite a few
things to like about it.
First things first, the songs on this album have quite a lot to
boast to themselves. The title-track, for example, is a catchy,
well-composed track that you may find yourself humming afterwards,
kind of like Alanis' "You Oughta Know" (come on, you
know you used to like it.) "Liar" is also impressive; it
sees Kelly rocking out a bit, which is something that is unnecessarily
sparse on this album.
Unfortunately, a few of the tracks aren't as inspired.
"Shoebox," for example, comes off as simply being awkward,
and "Hell-Taker" is a peculiarly discordant tune that won't
find acceptance with any audience.
All in all, Buchanan's work boasts a lot of catchiness and
enjoyment to it, but suffers from a few major flaws. If you really
liked Ani Difranco and Alanis Morissette circa-1995,
then this will definitely be up your alley. Others may want to look
elsewhere.
