John Wayne Shot Me

"Let Sleeping Monsters Sleep" CDEP

62TV Records

Genres: indie pop

Nov 15 - 21 2004

What a cute release.  John Wayne Shot Me, an electronics-loving pop fourpiece from Ammerzoden, Holland, have put together this seven track EP for the Belgian 62TV label.  The band, who have played with a wide array of indie pop bands, and who also have released a limited edition split 7" with Grandaddy, show their cheery side here - Let Sleeping Monsters Sleep includes one peppy original song (from their forthcoming album), and six covers.

The band's original composition, the title-track, is a short, endearing pop tune accentuated by sweet vocals and a cheery keyboard section.  But the covers are the real attraction.  The six reworkings include tributes to like-minded pop bands (Jonathan Richman and Daniel Johnston), an Electric Light Orchestra tune ("Calling America"), a pop translation of some Napalm Death black metal, a memorable rendition of "Survivor" by Destiny's Child, and a brief version of Carter Family standard "There'll Be Joy, Joy, Joy."  My personal favourites are the ELO tune (sooo...catchy...) and the computer-voiced "There'll By Joy, Joy, Joy," but the creepy pop of the Napalm Death track is quite a feat.

The Let Sleeping Monsters Sleep EP is a very playful release, and that speaks volumes about John Wayne Shot Me's unique style.  I like, I like...
