Lily Cedar

"Sleeper" CD

Extra Small Records

Genres: lo-fi, indie pop, singer / songwriter

July 18 - 24 2005

Listening to album opener, "Airplane," I keep thinking when's this song going to take off?  Four minutes later, I'm still wondering.  Lily Cedar is your average four-track hometaper, pairing personal lyrics with simple guitar parts (and occasional drum machine and electronics.)  Songs are short, sweet affairs, with a very homemade approach behind the music.  The problem is - though the tunes are lush and pleasant, they never really take flight.  Lily Cedar will hit upon a nice progression of two or three chords but rarely expand upon it, making for lovely but ultimately unfulfilling listening.  This formula makes Sleeper perfect for an occasionally spin in the stereo - Lily's warm, heartfelt songs sometimes really fit the bill - so long as you aren't expecting something more.
