Katie Marie

"Been Here Before" CDR

Self-released

Genres: singer / songwriter, adult alternative, soft rock

Aug 25 - Aug 31 2003

Katie Marie is a female vocalist who writes and sings simple, inoffensive pop songs that are often drab and uninteresting. Her back-up musician, Jools O'Kelly (who looks a bit like "Whose Line Is It Anyway" comedian Ryan Stiles), is barely noticeable on Been Here Before save for some piano parts and a bit of backing vocals. So, put simply, this album is pretty much all Katie, who is somewhere in between Sarah McLachlan and Sheryl Crow in musical style.

I cannot recommend Been Here Before because it doesn't offer anything particularly notable. The song "Star" sticks out as a fairly catchy, adult alternative style pop tune with a nice piano and vocal feel, but it goes on for too long. The rest of the songs are moderately catchy but they will not earn repeated listens from any audience.

Katie Marie needs to focus her attention on writing more interesting songs that don't borrow so much from music that has already been done before. She obviously has some songwriting talent, but needs to channel it into more creative and unconventional ideas. Otherwise, she'll remain ignored like all the other thousands of female pop singers out there.
