Hybrid Kid

Self-titled CDEP

Self-released

Genres: indie pop, indie rock

July 18 - 24 2005

Hybrid Kid's EP is a surprisingly strong indie pop release reminiscent of Sebadoh, Guided By Voices, and Cracker.  These four songs are engaging, infectious songs with fresh sounds and strong melodies.  I was expecting some sort of self-satisfying electronica exercise from the cover, and I must say I was very pleased with what I got instead.  The fun kicks off with EP centrepiece "Dropped," an immediately catchy pop song with an amazing, crunchy chord progression and an excellent chorus.  "Hook" and "Cotton Head" don't quite live up to the first track, but each one is home to a solid set of pop hooks; the former has a bit of a Terror Twilight tinge to it, while the latter's off-kilter melody makes for an unconventionally wonderful experience.  The only sore spot on this disc is "Isthmus," which is simply an average pop tune - but it's an easy blip to overlook on an EP so saturated in quality pop.
