Grayson Wray Project

"Imaginary Episodes" CD

self-released

Genre: pop

May 2007

Spirited and peppy, yet ultimately bland and irritating 70s-ish pop from this Grayson Wray guy and his Project. At first I was kind of enjoying their light take on pop - "And She's From Nowhere" is a nice song. They add flute to give things an airy feel, and his female backup singers provide timely harmonies. Even beachy "Up the California Coast" can evoke a smile or two. But the formula gets old somewhere around the fourth track on this fourteen song journey, and even as background music it's hard for this to keep playing without people noticing and becoming annoyed with the never-ending lite-pop joyfest. A little kick and variety will be necessary for Grayson Wray in the future if he wants an album that can be enjoyed past track four. For now, this suffers from Katrina and the Waves syndrome.
