The Workin' Stiffs - Dog Tired... And Then Some (CD)
(TKO Records - www.tkorecords.com)
[Genres: street punk, punk rock, hardcore]
This
is a cd that compiles music from The Workin' Stiffs album "Dog Tired" and a few
of their 7"s and compilation appearances. In case you didn't know, The Workin' Stiffs
were a great San Francisco street punk band from the early 1990s that simply rocked. It
shows, too. All of the songs here are a joy to listen to, and nothing disappoints. The
music itself does not exactly show that much originality, or that much good songwriting
for that matter, but what it does show is a wealth of enthusiasm and pure fun that nothing
can match. Perhaps it's the simplicity that makes this such a blast. For example,
"Wiggum" is a song dedicated to Clancy Wiggum, the police chief in The Simpsons.
It features a great sing-a-long chorus, and you could probably go on for hours singing it
before you realize the "big fat man in blue" is actually a cartoon character.
But what's wrong with that? Nothing! This is all very rockin' stuff, with excellent
guitarwork done by Mike Winter, and powerful drumming by Eric Bird. My personal favourite
is the anthem "Down with the Show," which is pure street punk perfection,
complete with a wonderful chorus and excellent, aggressive guitar playing. This makes me
want to smash things.
