Various Artists - Sonic Residue From Vapourspace (Remix Compilation CD) (Magna Carta Records - www.magnacarta.net) Vapourspace, in case you are not aware, is a one-piece electronica outfit with a large, impressive history. Perhaps you might remember the "Gravitational Arch of 10" single from 1993? That was Vapourspace. This release, on the legendary Magna Carta label, is a selection of progressive rock pieces that have been remixed by Vapourspace himself. Many of these pieces really do a lot with the original piece, adding textures and different atmospheres, instead of merely adding a new beat to each song. For example, in his reconstruction of Explorers Club's "Time Enough," a modified, electronic background enhances the power of the original vocals, lending the piece a crisp, solid feel. The manner in which the horn and guitar parts in the piece are cut-up, modified, and rearranged makes for a beautiful listening experience, something that isn't as readily available as it should be nowadays. "Melt," by Bozzio Levin Stevens, is another excellent piece, featuring a guitar solo that has been very expertly treated by Vapourspace. Although much of the original guitarwork remains intact under Vapourspace's knife, a large percent of it is also modified to create an eerie, unsettling feel to the tracks. As well, the drumwork is replaced by an electronic beat; additional synthesizer parts are also added in for good measure. This CD will be enjoyed by those who are interested in both progressive rock and electronica. Fans of Underworld, The Orb, and even Plaid will find this to be at thoroughly enoyable listen.
