Neutral - Driving Backwards

(Mad Monkey Records and Hymen Records - madmonkey.org)
[Genres: electronica, experimental electronica]

y032-stamp.jpg (15110 bytes)This coming from a lady who claims she recorded the sounds of her cat in the dryer when she was seven, no wonder it starts off with and abrasive beat. But, then the song takes a turn for the more calm and relaxed. Hmmm… I really like the guitar in the background in this first song, "airport". The other songs on this electronica release are really good as well, "kitchen kilometer green" is a delightful, spacey piece that begs you to start dancing. The synths and beat come together perfectly. "curtain" is a beautiful song with the sound of a piano at the other side of a big room. The field-recording-like approach really works, and brings a slightly less electronic feel to this album. The song being played on the piano itself is really good, as well. Near the end, some neat beats come into play to finish it off. Then, "february and march", a more electronic piece, starts off with some beats, and then moves into the melody of the song with some heavy synths, and then some more airy textures are added in. It sounds a bit like "Little Fluffy Clouds" by The Orb, and also like some of Orbital's stuff. Then comes "j. doesn't do acid anymore." This starts off dark and menacingly and then turns into a nice, ambient piece with some background samples, similar to Aphex Twin's "Pancake Lizard". I like the airiness of this song, which is good in the dark. Later in the song comes a nice beat which really works in the context. The song progresses further and all around makes a really nice impression on the listener. Then comes "why didn't you like me", starting off with a sample that makes you laugh. Then comes the piano-driven body of the piece, and then the more abrasive synths and a menacing whispered voice. Finally, but unfortunately, the short album ends. It reminded my of a more electronic Godspeed You Black Emperor! a bit. Neutral appears to be progressing musically, and her talent seems slightly Aphex Twin-esque. As for the album, it's definitely worth a purchase. Neutral's brand of electronica music is always fun and beautiful to listen to.
