Kenneth Gaburo - Tape Play

(Pogus Productions - pogus.com)
[Genres: sound collage, sound art, experimental]

e34034ffm5j.jpg (8994 bytes)This collection of avant-garde musician Kenneth Gaburo's tape pieces spans from 1964-1992. Here are two words to describe this music: eerie, unsettling. The pieces carry a very strange, dark aspect to them, like an evil carnival. This is mostly tape collage, with some other styles incorporated as well. Fat Millie's Lament, the first song, is a spooky opening track which prepares you for the inside contents. Not all of it is as spooky, some of it is more funny than spooky, especially the second song, the Wasting of Lucrecetzia, which actually reminds me of Captain Beefheart. Some pieces like Re-Run seem a bit pointless and drab, but they begin to sound better each additional time they're heard. One of the pieces, Mouthpiece II, features a male voice, which is edited to make a weird sound-art poem ("his nose begins to eat every thing non-stop").
