Katrina Bishop - Runaway Lane (CD)
(Grizelda Records - www.katrinabishop.com)
[Genres: celtic, jazz-pop, pop]
"Runaway Lane" is Katrina Bishop's first attempt at recording and
releasing a full-length album, and, by golly, let's hope it isn't her last! Bishop
takes her influences from many different styles, but jazz-pop and celtic are the most
prevalent within this release. "Blushing Bride," the first track on the
album, is primarily a celtic piece, utilizing a delicious combination of violin and vocals
- both of which merge together flawlessly. The song tells a story of a bride who
discovers, on the day of her wedding, that her fiancé is abusive - when it's too late to
back out. The story is sung flawlessly by Bishop, illuminating the tale by the use
of unsettlingly catchy melodies and appropriately sensitive lyrics ("As she knelt
down by his side at the altar to take in the heavenly host/One cheek was red from the flat
of his hand and the other was pale as a ghost"). In contrast, another song,
entitled "Mr. Jealousy," is a warm, elegant piece of jazz-pop, using a nice
mixture of trumpet and vocals in the foreground. Altogether, this is a very
enjoyable collection of songs, with Bishop dipping her feet into both Celtic and jazz-pop
territory. She is a very gifted singer, and a talented songwriter as well; her style
will appeal to fans of Holly Cole and the like. This music fits perfectly as a
background to a social party, but also manages to hold up on its own. "Runaway
Lane" is both irresistable and elegant - fans of the genres will doubtlessly enjoy
it!
