Duane Peters and the Hunns - Wayward Bantams
(CD/LP)
(Disaster Records - www.disasterecords.com -

[Genres: punk rock, punk, street punk]
Ooh man, I haven't heard any
truly great punk in a while. Knowing that, you can imagine my joy upon popping
"Wayward Bantams" into the cd player. I was confronted with an amazing
punk rock release, played with both urgency and attitude. Then again, what else can
I expect from Duane Peters, the man who also fronts the U.S. Bombs?
The opening track, "Surf Sacrifice," is a great, rockin' tune that you're sure
to enjoy. It combines the urgency of early Bad Religion with an amazing
rock aesthetic, producing an amazing hybrid of the two. One of my favourite tracks,
"Hobo Jungle," tells the tale of being a homeless train-hopper. It
features some good punk lyrics ("Tatter'd men we are described, demented vagrants/We
don't need much and all we beg is to keep out bellies full") and great
songwriting. The song's style itself exhibits a whole bubbling cauldron of
influences, combining Rancid, the New Town Animals, the U.S.
Bombs, and countless others into a delicious concoction. The end result is
a powerful, driving piece that offers both content and enjoyment.
Of course, similarities to the U.S. Bombs are
clearly evident here, but this album also packs enough of its own style to make it totally
original. Duane Peters certainly has proven himself to be an excellent musician -
what will be next?
