33.3 - plays music

Ah, good ol' 33.3. Hard to
describe
a mixture of jazz, soft rock, and, of course, thei own breed of
experimentalism. The first piece, "Power Failure At the U.N.", starts off a bit
like "Rancho Diablo," off their self-titled debut album. Then it changes into a
more laidback, jazzy atmosphere. This music is hard to describe. Lots of it is loungy
music, except with it's own distinct style. "Three" starts off like a Fly Pan Am
song, except with a cello. "Joane will" is a jazzy little piece that's very
atmospheric and goes through a number of moods. Perhaps you could call this
sunset-on-a-tropical-island music. It's discreet, it's suttle, and it's darn tootin' good.
It's like a pear. You see, in the front you have the ordinaries: apples, bananas, oranges,
etc. But in the back, there's the much quieter pear. You're used to eating the apples and
bananas, but then you try a pear one day and it blows you away! Who knew that such a good
fruit could stay quiet all this time? Well, that's what this reminds me of. Anyway, this
music is a mixture of stuff like Tortoise's jazzy post-rock, Fly Pan Am's drones, and Jim
O'Rourke's cello. So don't be fooled by those who call this instrumental rock, there' much
more to it. By the way, the celloist, Dominique Davidson, was formerly part of A Minor
Forest.
