Phil Kline's Zippo Songs is out now on the Cantaloupe label.  As the press sheet reads:

"Zippo Songs is a collection of deeply moving and intense songs featuring poetry inscribed on the cigarette lighters of American GIs during the Vietnam war. Kline has set these profound and often desperate poems with a calm and sacred spaciousness that echoes through the listener as if the soldiers themselves are singing to us from the afterlife. Coupled with songs set too texts by current US Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, Zippo Songs is Kline's fascinating and eloquent statement on war and politics of war, and a fresh and new take on the age-old tradition of the protest song."

Dec 15 2003

Do Make Say Think's Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn album is out now on Constellation Records.

Sep 15 2003

The new Modest Mouse album, originally expected for a September release, has now been pushed back until spring 2004.  This is apparently the evildoings of their (major) label, Sony/Epic, and the band is both apologetic and angered by the development.  As are we all, as are we all.  Good News For People Who Love Bad News' exact release date remains in limbo for now.

Aug 25 2003

Kind of old news now, I suppose, but maniacal music releasers Guided By Voices are planning a new six-CD box set, Hardcore UFO's, that will include a greatest-hits CD, a DVD of Watch Me Jumpstart (a documentary by the band), an unreleased tracks comp, and a CD version of the band's 1986 debut EP, Forever Since Breakfast.  It will be the band's third box set, and is due out on November 4.  To promote the release, GBV will hide 25 tickets in random copies of their upcoming album, Earthquake Glue, that will entitle the finder to a free copy of the box set.  Gnarly!

Aug 6 2003

The Notwist's soundtrack to Lichter, a German film made by two young directors.  The soundtrack is on vinyl only, on German label alientransistor, and features three tracks from the film and one Console remix of the whole thing.  Apparently the music is largely based on a piano loop and minimal electronics.  So it isn't Neon Golden II then.

American Music Club have reformed.  The legendary, Mark Eitzel-fronted band plan to release a new album [eight tracks are already recorded], after which they will embark on a tour.

Twig Infection's The Big Blowjay CD is out now on the 2.ND REC label of Germany.  Expect a combination of math rock, art rock, and sharp pop.

Jandek's 20th album, One Foot In The North, originally released in 1991, has been reissued by Corwood Industries.

Worth mentioning sheerly out of weirdness value: The newly reissued Labyrinths & Jokes compilation is out now.  From the press release:

"Labyrinths and Jokes was originally released on LP in 1998 in a small edition of only 500 copies. Six tracks of diverse and creative noise from six completely bizarre bands. This LP was the first statement from an utterly brilliant and fucked up group of musicians and friends who have since spawned such musical monstrosities as Andrew W.K., Wolf Eyes and the Nautical Almanac. Six tracks of diverse and creative noise from six totally fucked up bands."

Apr 14 2003

Apr 7 2003

Power pop darlings Ozma will be releasing their new album, Spending Time On The Borderlines, on May 6 on Kung Fu Records.

The new Alkali Trio album, Good Mourning, will be released on May 13 on Vagrant Records.  This is a particularly controversial release for the band, because they enlisted the production assistance of Joe McGrath (Blink 182) and Jerry Finn (Blink 182, Green Day, Bad Religion).  As if enough people didn't hate Vagrant Records already.

The new Ultimate Fakeboox EP, Before We Spark, will be released on May 13 on Initial Records.

Set Fire To Flames' Telegraphs in Negative/Mouths Trapped in Static double-LP will be released on Apr 28 on Fat Cat Records.  The North American release will be handled by Montreal label Alien8 Recordings.

Thrill Jockey has just released two albums, Califone's Quicksand/Cradlesnakes and Howe Gelb's The Listener.

Three new offerings from the Drag City label are out now.  Dianne Bellino's Slitch is the first release - it's actually a DVD and CD package that includes the movie Slitch ("a short comic film about a teenage girl's summertime lust") and its soundtrack.  The second offering is (Smog)'s new Supper, which sees him playing the guitar with guest female singers.  Lastly, there's Imitation Electric Piano's Trinity Neon.  Apparently, the usually instrumental band actually enlists vocals on some of the tunes.

4AD apparently has reissue fever.  On May 20, 2003 (like I really need to mention the date), the legendary label will be re-releasing not one, not two, not three, not four, not five, not six, but SEVEN Pixies albums.  Included in the mass reissue are Come On Pilgrim, Surfer Rosa, Doolittle, Bossa Nova, Trompe Le Monde, Pixies at the BBC, and The Complete B-Sides.  Whoa nelly.

Dead Can Dance fans will have something to look forward to (and criticize the track listing of) when 4AD Records releases the new Wake 2CD best-of anthology on May 6.

The twentieth edition of the Little Darla Has A Treat For You compilation is due out on March 25.

Set Fire To Flames' Telegraphs In Negative/Mouths Trapped in Static CD is due out on April 7 on France's Fat Cat Records.

Mar 3 2003

On the German Euroralph label is a special 3000-copy limited edition version of The Residents' new Demons Dance Alone album.  The special edition is a double-CD set (a whole bonus disc not on the regular version) with special suede packaging.

Massive Attack's Robert "3D" Del Naja" has been arrested for possession of child pornography and drugs.  But you already knew this already, didn't'cha?  Charges have yet to be pressed.  This is one in a series of over 1600 arrests in the UK related to a recent child pornography sting that also affected ex-Who member Peter Townshend.

PJ Harvey is apparently working on a follow-up to 2000's Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea.  She is also working with Queens of the Stone Age guitarist / vocalist Josh Homme on an unrelated project.

Victorialand

A new 7-CD boxset entitled Kentucky Mountain Music: Classic Recording of the 20s & 30s is coming out on Feb 25th on the Yazoo label.  As the promo blurb reads out:

"As the Mississippi Delta is to blues, Kentucky is to fiddle music, banjo playing, and classic old ballads and songs. No other state comes even close in both terms of amazing diversity of styles and just pure prodigious amounts of great classic performances. This 7 CD box set contains almost 200 all-time great performances by some of the finest country musicians who ever lived. It is a treasure trove of Americana, and one of the most important roots projects ever assembled. Since all the recordings are from the 1920s and 1930s, its as close to ultimate sources as anything can be."

Jan 20 2003

Due out on Sub Pop on January 21 are Holopaw's self-titled CD and Kinski's Airs Above Your Station.  Sub Pop's recently been in a bit of a slump, releasing critically-panned garage rock albums and other bland material.  These new releases are relatively big risks - Holopaw is essentially a completely unknown band and comes as a bit of a risk for the label.  Kinski, meanwhile, is a well-established psychedelic group who are prematurely being called the "saviors of Sub Pop," as they've just been recently signed the label.  Strange Attractors Audio House will be handling the 2LP version of Kinski's debut.

Announced for release on January 21 on the 3 Men With Beards label is Television's Marquee Moon LP.  From the promo blurb:

"To call it punk rock is like describing Dostoevsky as a short-story writer... it's hard to conceive of a world without Marquee Moon being part of it... a revolutionary album! Features: exact reproduction on 180 gram vinyl, original artwork including lyrics and memorabilia, detailed liner notes by Michael Layne Heath, all-analog mastering from the original master tapes."

Two Gary Numan reissues, of I, Assassin and Warriors coming out on Beggars Banquet in December.  Both reissues will be on CD.

New Mountain Goats 7", See America Right, out now on 4AD.

Cat Power will be releasing her new album, You Are Free, on CD and 2LP on February 18, 2003.  Matador Records, as usual, will be handling the release.  Fans may note that it was recorded by Adam Kaspar, who also served as engineer for bands like Pearl Jam and The Foo Fighters.

Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks (that's Stephen, not Steven) fans should look forward to March 2003.  Because guess what?  The second Jicks album is coming out!  Pig Lib's the name and Matador Records is the game.  Wait, what did that even mean?  Matador is the "game"??  Never mind.  You get it.

Remix Cornelius, get a prize.  Actually, I don't know if there's any prize.  Err... the winners might end up on a future Cornelius release... Matador's website is vague, and Cornelius' isn't in proper English.  But check it out anyway.  Who knows, maybe you'll win a million dollars.

As stated in an article in Eye Magazine, the Elephant 6 collective is now officially defunct.  While many of the bands continue to make music, they will no longer display the wonderful Elephant 6 logo on their cover art.  What impact this has on the scene is yet to be felt, but, as Of Montreal is quick to point out - Elephant 6 is dead in name, not in spirit.

MEGA LABEL NEWS!  Matador Records is now a part of the Beggars Group of labels!  That's right, the Beggars Group has purchased a whole 50% of Matador.  Both sides are very positive about the agreement; Matador head honcho Chris Lombardi commented that he expects the team-up of Matador and Beggars Banquet to be "a force to reckon with".  Other members of the Beggars Banquet group include 4AD, Mo'Wax, Mantra, XL, Wiiija, Too Pure, and, of course, Beggars Banquet.  Matador boasts such bands and artists as Mogwai, Guided By Voices, The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, and the much-hyped Interpol.

The Rephlex label has released a new Grime compilation.  As the press sheet reads,

"First major compilation of this breaking new UK underground scene. Post-drum'n'bass, way-post-UK-Garage, 'Grime' is intense and mindblowing ... 'Grime. Sublow. Dubstep. It's Music. Different people call it different things, depending on when they discovered it. In the 80's, maybe it was House, Techno and Electro. In the 90's it was UK-G, Drum and Bass, Breaks or whatever. Now there are so many terms for it that the journalists can't pigeon-hole it any more. This is a good thing -- it's music. Moody music, multifunctional, multifaceted music created by Humans with Brains, Hearts, Machines & Electricity. Music that's great for dancing to in clubs, or submerging yourself within your headphones, your car, your home, wherever. It's instrumental dance music, but it's the perfect forum for the best MC's and vocalists. We at Rephlex call it Grime to publicize to the people at large, outside of the specialist world of its producers. The purists might debate the name, but while they do that, crews around the globe are uniting in this strong & fresh dance movement. In this age of Information Technology, people are able to easily find real quality that they actually want, without being spoon-fed compromised product. Now, it is a time of change and the soundtrack is Grime.'"

Prefuse 73's Extinguished EP is out now on Warp Records.  As the promo sheet reads: "The new 23 track, 39 minute EP proves that Herren has a reservoir of music flowing from him. Leftfield Eurodisco made local waves when it came out in 1981, selling nearly 400,000 copies. Nonetheless, it remains little-known today. Mira Calix's new Skimskitta is out now on Warp Records.  I'd give you a snippet from the promo blurb but it wouldn't help you any.  Aw, what the heck:

"A soul record. By a singer-songwriter. On Warp. Electronic music, but not as we know it. Its predecessor, OneOnOne, was red, but this is white. Beautiful, evocative, romantic, a 61-minute piece, or movement, with no spaces, no gaps, and lots of interesting noises conjured from unusual sources. Mira Calix says that Skimskitta, her new album, is all of the above. Controversially, she also considers it a guitar record."

Kid Koala is getting ready for a big release in March.  Penned for release on ECW Press is an interesting little project of sorts - a book!  Apparently a "300 page graphic novel with soundtrack for piano and turntable," the release, Nufonia Must Fall, is his first "serious" work since 2000's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.  According to the trailer, Nufonia is a love story of sorts involving a robot and a girl.  The release will be followed a major tour, penned the Sit Down Theatre Tour, that will incorporate both audio and visual elements.  How exciting!

Melt-Banana's Cell Scape, which you have undoubtedly been looking forward to for months, is out now on the band's Azap label.

Vacouous Ninnies' self-titled album is out now on Quatermass Records.  As the press sheet explains: "His method of working is to sit down (very important) and grab a handful of cassette tapes picked at random from a box containing hundreds. 'The tapes can include anything from Autechre, Tortoise and Mouse On Mars to Napalm Death, Stockhausen and Madonna. it really doesn't matter. I then play these tapes on a beaten old ghetto blaster with a knackered EQ. it's completely fucked but gives everything a wonderfully warm and compressed sound. I find a clean digital sample makes the music a little too cold. The signal is then fed through a Korg Kaoss Pad to completely mash things up. I might flick across to the radio, too, to cram as much information into a sample as possible. The more that you have going on in a sample, the less control you have over it. As a result, the end product -- the music -- is far more unpredictable.'"

May 19 2003

New Massimo CD, Hello Dirty, will provide twelve tracks of fun for glitch fans alike.  Released on Mego, the album is characterized by a very bizarre promo blurb.  Don't believe me?  Take a gander at this excerpt:

"She was very good. Her mouth was so hot and her tongue never stopped moving upon the limited card surface.  Most women forgot to use their tongues when they gave Massimo's releases an initial inspection."

I love Mego.

COH's new Mask Of Birth album is out now on Mego.  It's actually a reissue of a vinyl-only release on Raster-Noton from 1999.  On CD now.

New record by Low Res (entitled Blue Ramen) on Plug Research.  I'm not sure what to make of it:
"Low Res aka Danny Zelonky from Milwaukee/US has pulled off the impossible! Capturing the vibrance [sic] and immediacy of improvisationally - composed [sic] music as played by an amazing ensemble but without the benefit of players, instruments, or microphones!"
That's how the promo sheet reads.  I'm not sure what can be recorded without microphones, but why not pick it up and see?

John Coney-directed Sun Ra film Space Is The Place has been released on Plexifilm on the fine format of DVD.  As the promo sheet reads, "Science fiction, blaxploitation, cosmic free-jazz and radical race politics combine when Sun Ra returns to earth in his music-powered space ship to battle for the future of the black race and offer an 'alter-destiny' to those who would join him. Intentionally created as an homage to the low-budget science fiction films of the 50's and 60's, Space Is The Place became a visual embodiment of Sun Ra's Afro-Egyptian myth of salvation in outer space. The special effects, outrageous plot line and apocalyptic message harmonize with the otherworldly score and a climactic live performance by one of the most innovative and profound groups in jazz history."

Bananamour (1973)

Joy Of A Toy (1969)

Shooting At The Moon [as Kevin Ayers and the Whole World] (1970)

Whatevershebringswesing (1973)

[All four albums were originally released on Harvest Records]

On Gear Fab Records: The Neutral Spirits' self-titled debut.  "In 1972, 5 young men from the hills of Tennessee embarked on a journey to Atlanta, Georgia to record 8 original songs they had worked on for several years. Ranging in ages from 14-17, these five young men layed down some Doors-inspired music and made great use of the fuzz and distortion pedals of their guitars. From their songs of protest such as 'Speaking Freely' and 'Flying' to the 7 minute fuzz-fest 'Flower', these young musicians made their mark in psychedelic history."  Having just seen Deliverance for the first time last night, I'm both intrigued and scared shitless.

The new (and unbearably low-key) Orange Doubledome label, whose marketing plan apparently is to target "a very secretive and mysterious group of extremely fat and dangerous men", has two spiffy new reissues out now.  The first is The Jacks' Live 68-7-24, a rare live album by the Japanese psych act.  Only 200 copies were originally put out in 1968 (originals cost upwards of $1500), and this reissue has been limited to an edition of 500.
Meanwhile, the label has also reissued 300 copies of Jeff Moore & Friends's The Youngest Son, a Christmas album packed full of dreamy folk-rock.
Both releases are on vinyl only.
As far as I can tell, all of Orange Doubledome's releases are currently available exclusively through Forced Exposure mailorder.

Shadoks Music (from Germany) have just reissued three ultra-rare psych releases from the States.
The first of the bunch is Fresh Blueberry Pancake's Heavy CD, of which only 54 copies were originally pressed for promotional purposes.  Then comes Mendelbaum's self-titled 2CD, a combination of live and studio recordings.  Finally, we have Texan psych rockers Iota's self-titled album, a collection of deliciously dark and disturbing psychedelia.
Note: Indieville will be reviewing all three of these records in the next little while, stay tuned!

New from the Earkmark label of Italy:

Black Sabbath's third album, Master of Reality, is getting a vinyl reissue.

Venom's 1981 debut, Welcome To Hell, has been re-released as a vinyl LP.

Two Kinks records, 1965's Kinda Kinks and 1966's The Kink Kontroversy.  As the promo blurb states, "Davies, McCartney, Lennon -- England's musical geniuses -- perhaps even in that order."

Bert Jansch's Jack Orion LP has been reissued on vinyl.

Jimmy Cliff's self-titled second-album has been reissued on vinyl.

Now on Soul Jazz Records is an all-new CD compilation entitled Rare Funk and Soul from Miami.  The informative promo blurb explains:

"Soul Jazz Records new release features rare and classic Funk and deep Soul from Miami, Florida from 1968-74. The artists on this compilation include Helene Smith, Miami's first lady of Soul, Frank Williams and The Rocketeers (featuring a very young Little Beaver on vocals), George McRae's rare-groove classic 'I Get Lifted' (written by Casey Finch), Timmy Thomas' truly experimental track 'Funky Me', Gwen McRae's classic '90% of Me' as well as a host of practically unknown Miami artists who never managed to make it outside the city borders! The album comes with loads of unique original photos and sleevenotes."

The Akarma label of Italy is reissuing George Stavis' Labyrinth CD, originally released on Vanguard Records.  The promo sheet reads:

"In 1969, banjo player George Stavis made his Vanguard debut with Labyrinths: Occult Improvisational Compositions For 5-String Banjo And Percussion, an eclectic release that enters into so-called 'Sandy Bull territory', using instrumental improvisation to bring together a variety of genres (jazz, country, ethnic and psychedelia). Here Stavis plays Earl Scruggs, John Coltrane, Ravi Shankar and John Fahey, but his own unique musical voice is what dominates the recording."

Gene Clark's extravagant No Other album will be reissued on April 8 on Collector's Choice Music.  A must for fans of both his solo work and his stuff with The Byrds.

Stereolab's ABC Music.... The Radio 1 Sessions double-CD set is out now on Koch International.

Chuck Willis' Chuck Willis Wails! The Complete Okeh Recordings '51 - '56 double-cd set:

Comprising 51 tracks, this first-ever, vault-emptying 2-disc retrospective features from the original master tapes every recording Willis waxed for Okeh, Columbia and Epic Records, 1951-1956: blazing 78rpm and 45rpm sides, album tracks, and long-lost gems heard here for the very first time."

Feb 17 2003

There are some really neat reissues and collections coming out now, including a nice set of releases from Shadoks Music:

Lula Cortes E Ze Ramalho's Paubirú double-LP is first on the block.  In a limited pressing of 350 numbered copies, each with heavy gatefold and an 8 page LP size booklet, the record is heavily regarded as the rarest LP from psychedelic Brazil.  According to the press release, you can expect an acid trip filled with acoustic instruments and heavy fuzz guitar.

Second is Justin Heathcliff's self-titled LP, another psych re-release of 350 numbered copies.  The press release says you can expect heavy vinyl, a heavy textured cover, OBI, an insert, and gold engraved artwork.  For those who don't recognize him from last year's Love, Peace and Poetry collection from Japan, Justin Heathcliff is actually a Japanese band who used a British name in hopes of achieving success in the UK.  Very poppy for a psychedelic release.

Lastly we have Shinki Chen's LP, another edition of 350 copies.  Shinki, in case you are not aware, was part of Speed Glue & Shinki, a well-known Japanese band of the psychedelic period.  According to the promo sheet, the album is filled with "extra heavy fuzz guitar all over" and "songs about drugs & girls." Also, "if this was sung in
Japanese they would have banned it."

On the Get Back label of Italy are another bunch of wicked releases:

Paul Bley Quintet's Closer LP, originally released on ESP-Disk in 1965 is getting a vinyl reissue.  Bley was a strong member of the 1960s free jazz movement, and will appeal to fans of Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry.

Another 1965 free jazz reissue comes in the form of Henry Grimes Trio's The Call LP.

Also out on the label is a 1973 free jazz session by Frank Lowe entitled Black Beings.

Also, the new Movement Soul compilation has been issued: "Movement Soul is a collection of live recordings from the Civil Rights movement at a peak time: 1963 and 1964. Inspired moments have been chosen from mass meetings, sermons, rallies, demonstrations and individual interviews. Traditionally sung prayers and passionate sayings are intermingled with songs like 'Go Tell it on the Mountain', 'This Little Light of Mine' and 'Ain't Gonna Let Nobody Turn me 'Round'. Many of the
recordings took place at times of heightened emotion, when the community was filled with fear, exhilaration, or defiance. Movement Soul is about a total community: its shared dreams and common demands. It is about the power of a people."

Finally, we've got two Johnny Cash reissues, Sings Folsom Prison Blues, All Aboard The Blue Train, and a John Lee Hooker reissue of The Folklore Of John Lee Hooker.  All of these are being reissued in vinyl editions.

The Crippled Dick Hot Wax is also contributing to the major reissue pile this week, with Kristian Schultze Set's Recreation LP, originally released in 1972 on Tempo Records.
